Furmint and Hun Szepsy Jr, 2020

Lemon colour. Slightly floral, green apple, spice with firestone in the back. Lanolin, waxy, medium intense. Greengage, green apple. Dry, crisp, linear style, refreshing medium-light body, zesty, crisp finish with a lemon peel, green apple, simple finish. Fine mouth-coating lively acidity, “chablis-que” in style.

Dorgó 2017, less than 0,18 ha in size@ Szepsy Estate, in Mezőzombor based on grey mica soil with Western exposure, giving usually light, delicate, elegant wines. The wines usually ferment in stainless steel tanks and go into 300 L oak barrels.

Medium lemon colour. Honey, caramel tart, spice, medium intense, opening up nicely. Ripe fruit with a hint of a floral touch, vanilla touch, and elderberry note. Dry, bold spice, round, caramel tart, honey. Fresh juicy, round and mellow style with a medium body, spice, smooth ripe fruit, yellow driven. Gentle nutty tone with a caramel tart, spice and moderate length.

Thurzó 2017, vineyard just next to the famous Szarvas in the Tarcal community, the soil is mainly loess and dacite tuff, wines usually have a smooth texture and a floral edge too.

Medium lemon colour. Spicy and peppery, fair intensity on the nose. Yellow fruit, tangerine, and orange peel on the nose with a gentle peppery touch. Quince in the back. Kicking off with a hint of sweetness, lively crisp, peppery spiciness with plenty of orange fruit, yellow apple, quince and a small portion of honey, gentle creamy surface. Medium-long finish with a concentration and richness on the palate showing some mineral spice and delicacy too.

Hasznos 2016, at the northern edge of the Tállya community, the soil is based on andesite tuff, rhyolite tuff, and quartz, the wines usually show more depth and concentration (kind of a hidden gem), as well as complexity. Since it’s more Northern (Tállya) it is somewhat cooler compared to Mád and it is very much one of István’s favourite commune across “Hegyalja”.

Medium lemon colour. Herbal and herbs, marzipan coated in a herbal juice of green personality, a dash of tomato stalk with the spice note, like a great Kenyan coffee. Cool spice, lively, crisp full of energy, tart quince and peach, with an almost linear structure, pebble stone-like and medium-long finish. Very lively and with a strong personality. Square-like structure, fairly long finish with a strong focus on acidity and mineral spice.

Úrágya 2018, it’s reckoned one the finest photo places across Tokaj with lots of old vines. The soil is pre-dominantly quartz-tuff and red clay, usually, very mineral-driven wines as well as with depth and richness, some of the most full-bodied wines come from here.

Medium lemon colour. Opens slowly, some firestone in the back. Fine quince, gentle floral note, and melon hints in the back. Elegant spice. Tangerine with some depth of peach, fruit candy, ripe fruit, and wet stone. Dry, full-bodied, lively rich with lots of fruit intense bold mid-palate, minerality with lots of spice and ripe stone fruit. Very young though. Structured, well balanced. Very long finish with focus and tension to the end.

Úrágya 2017

Medium lemon colour. A hint of marzipan with some green spice and some wet wool character, slowly opening up. Elegant mouth-coating touch, lively acidity zesty, lemon, juicy note with a hint of green fruit and plenty of peach, smoke, spice and lime skin. Focused, spicy, and vibrant with a long finish. Cool mint with a gentle touch of sweet spice from the wood.

Szent Tamás 2016, it is a fairly big vineyard and certainly not homogenous, very different at the lower and higher ends. Withered zeolite, red clay, rhyolite and tuff, varied. The wines are usually very complex, rich with a distinctive mineral note.

Medium deep lemon colour. Precise and focused nose, full of ripe stone fruit, peach, apricot, melon, quince, spice, and mineral notes covered in ripe fruit. Dry, ripe fruit with a lovely zesty crisp, focused and intense spice, melon, yellow plum, and orange note with a long lingering and smooth finish, it goes on fairly well on the palate with a good run.

Szent Tamás 2011

Deep lemon colour. Spice, showing age and development on the nose, firestone, spice intense, pronounced, a lovely dash of perfume. Firestone with a fair amount of caramel and spice, cocoa notes, cacao nibs. Dry, ripe fruit bold, mellow, spice, round texture with lots of firestone and spice, smooth acidity well integrated, well balanced. Mineral peppery with a lovely chocolate nib character, unconched cholate with a gritty texture.

Medium lemon colour. Spice, layered fruit on the nose with lots of yellow fruit and tropical touch. Some gingerbread, spice, quince, lemon cake, spice and minerality in the back. Firestone, spice. Slowly opening up. Elegant. Ripe fruit is very intense, dry with lots of fruit packed, followed by spice, lively zesty note. Juicy, spice, ripe fruit, tangerine, some tropical fruit, mineral, salty grit with a delicate yet precise and very long finish. Honey, vanilla, sweet spice. Long finish.

Gold colour. Refreshing yet pronounced nose, orange and quince marmalade with honey and spice in the back. Elegant, and sweet on the palate with a lot of quince marmalade with spice, orange peel, refreshing, juicy lively. Long concentrated. Dash of floral note, lovely complexity. Drinks very well now.

Brown colour. Slightly oxidative note, caramel, fig, and prune touch of “rancio” personality. Sweet, caramel, fig, prune elegant perfume with a gentle note, fairly good grip, almost full-bodied. Spice, juicy, the sweetness almost moves to the back, lots of ageing notes. Layers of nutty notes and some sweetness.

Botond Cuvée 2006

Amber in colour, slightly cloudy. Spice, liquorice note, floral, tangerine, honey, smoke, honey-scented, reminds one of a gentle-old cellar in a good way. Fig, prune and honey, soy sauce with a lot more going on, there is personality here too. Sweet, juicy with a grip, spice, zesty elegant nutty, almond, cashew note with salted caramel and long concentrated finish.

Amber colour. Caramel, honey and prune on the nose, gingerbread spice, warm, dried fruit, clean as a whistle, followed by some date, fig, molasse. Lovely sweetness, spice, juicy, lively acidity bright spice long concentrated, fig, prune, finishing slightly dry only. Refreshing finish.

Deep gold colour. Quince, ripe fruit, honey, orange, youthful botrytis very fine nose. The pronounced scent, yet youthful too. Lively vivid, juicy, very rich honey, spice, orange, tropical fruit with lots of fine botrytis and spice shining through. Building up, lively, long and concentrated finish. A real beauty.

Amber colour, vivid. Fine intensity, orange, tangerine, quince, ripe fruit with honey, mellow scent. Caramel, candy, and red berry, layered with a fine perfume note. Super sweet, very lively and concentrated, almost full-bodied, rich spice, honey and concentrated, honey-comb, dried apricot, very concentrated very rich, long finish.

Deep amber colour. Fig, prune marmalade like dried fruit, dried plum, a bit “PX like” scent. Dash of oxidation, cigar tone, and dark chocolate, in the level of 90+% cacao level. Luscious sweet, elegant, aged style, concentrated, dried fig, very much, dried plum in the style, shows some lightness, smooth on the alcohol yet medium fresh acidity. 9%abv. Fully mature, due to cork (oxidation)? Nevertheless still good, but the difference between 2008, is huge!

Amber colour. Spice, fig, prune with a great concentration, honey spice, layered, need time for development. Great sweetness with a cool tone and lots of great acidity. Lively with lots of figs, prune and a salty grit, great concentration. Superb sweetness with a magnificent balance and sheer endless finish. Awesome!

Aszú 2005

Amber colour with a brown hint. Cacao nibs with a floral note and some herbs, green note as well. Basil, caraway, and green herbs, followed by dried quince dripped in a herbal sauce. Pronounced nose. Salty almond, covered in cocoa. Sweet, medium full-bodied, balance seems to be a bit wobbly, yet good concentration and fine sweet, bold spice with lots of raisins and prune in the back. Dash of leather, good concentration.

Amber colour. Super intense nose, fig, caramel, salted cashew, prune, fig with a lovely perfume. Delicious marmalade. Luscious sweetness, like a honey-marmalade juice with a crystal clear, dried fruit, spice, orange, honey and spice long and neverending finish. Lots of layers with focus and precision. Great acidity, lively, focused.

Amber colour. Pronounced nose with lots of spice, green, herbs, umami, layered notes, dried orange, great personality, basil, dark chocolate with a hint of perfume. Cool mint, lively refreshing bright zesty style, caramel, nutty, good depth. Intense spice complex, long length. Herbs, salty, sweetness with an umami mid-palate and lots of dried fruit, freshness is dominating with a precise finish and fair amount of nutty-combo.
